Abstract:

Album of snapshots documenting Company 1914 of the U.S. Civilian Conservation Corps, based at Buck Meadows Camp F-82 in Stanislaus National Forest, just west of Yosemite National Park. Chiefly scenes of the camp's buildings, tents and grounds, and everyday activities of U.S.C.C.C. enrollees at work and leisure. Also includes forest views; winter scenes; a view of Yosemite Falls; a view of Hetch Hetchy Reservoir; a scene taken at the Golden Gate International Exposition; a few scenes taken at and around a lighthouse on the coast; and a few images depicting San Francisco Bay, the Ferry Building in San Francisco, and the newly constructed Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. Depicted in a few images is an elaborate, decorated cake celebrating the years 1732-1940; and in one image a sign for the camp which reads: CCC, Company 1914, Camp Buck Meadows F-82. Lee M. Foster is possibly depicted in a few photographs.

Buck Meadows Camp F-82 was one of the first U.S. Civilian Conservation Corps established in its region of California, first occupied in 1933 by young men from the San Francisco Bay Area. Among the camp's projects were fire suppression, boundary surveys, range management and the building of truck trails and bridges.
Per bookseller, Lee M. Foster (born 1919) was the camp baker at Buck Meadows; established a film lab in the camp; in 1940 was drafted into U.S. Army and served in one of the armored divivsions that defeated Rommel near the end of World War II.
